What do YOU Love or Hate about CHRISTIANS?

23 comments:

  1. Greedy televangelists taking advantage of the ignorant, promising prosperity for those who donate money... then they fly to a hawaiian vacation on their private jets. Come on Benny Hinn, give me a break.

  2. I HATE church cliques. Isn't being a Christian supposed to be about showing love and acceptance to everyone? It's not doing any good if you make people feel like outsiders if they're not a Christian, or even if they're not the type of Christian YOU think they should be.

  3. I hate that "Christian" is just a label to some people and doesn't have any affect on how they live their life. Don't say it unless you really mean it.

  4. A lot of Christians seem to be opposed to education... like they'd rather live in ignorance or something. Like, education is a threat to their beliefs. Many Christians look down on people who don't go to "Christian Colleges". Sorry I didn't go to Liberty or Regent--I didn't want to be associated with Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson my entire life.

  5. The concept of being "non-denominational" or calling yourself a "bible Christian."
Hi. All Christians use the bible.
Also, the different denominations of Christianity are DIFFERENT for a reason, look into it, figure out what you believe. "I love Jesus" is not a religion. It's a wonderful part of Christianity, but please recognize thousands of years of trying to understand the truth the best way we can and don't adopt a slogan as your faith.

  6. To feed off of the above comment about denominations:

While I respect having different denominations and believe that differing emphases provide a good dynamic within Christianity, I HATE how disjointed Christians can be when it comes to denominations.

It's sad that some churches deny people Communion because they aren't a member of the "correct" church. It's sad that ministries on W&M's campus don't do more projects together and instead focus on their own agenda. It's sad that there can be hatred amongst Christians because we disagree on which translation of the Bible to use or what sort of music we should play in church.

I LOVE that the different denominations allow for expression of the Christian faith in different ways...

I HATE we can get so caught up in denominations that we lose sight of Christ.

  7. Above comment = legit :) Especially in regards to people sometimes losing sight of Christ. That's difficult.
But ecumenical programs are actually a big thing here :) All denominations (and non-denominations) were welcome at Wren today in union in faith against discrimination, for example.
And the whole communion thing is (if I'm right) a Catholic specific complaint. That's a huge difference between Catholics and Protestants, transubstantiation, and if Catholics choose that as the central aspect of their faith, and other denominations reject it, then the refusal of communion is legitimate.
I love being able to discuss Christianity without judgment :)

  8. I hate that there are people who constantly act like they themselves are being persecuted for being Christian. People have reasoned responses to all of the judgment and condescension they experience from Christians who are never interested in discussion, only conversion and proselytizing.

  9. I hate that people are born into Christianity and blindly believe in a religion that they don't actually follow

I hate how faith is lost in ritual and insiginificant practices

I hate how everyone assumes you are Christian and how it is considered a negative trait to not be religious

  10. I hate how Christians sometimes get a bad rap. We're not all ignorant bible-thumpers - and we don't all blindly follow whatever the church dictates.

I love having a community that respects others' beliefs, regardless of religion.

  11. I hate how Christians impose their beliefs on others. Don't believe in the ten commandments? You must be immoral. Life begins at inception? You can't have the right to an abortion.

I won't try to take away your right to live as you want, please don't try to take mine.

  12. I hate when Christians aren't whole-heartedly devoted to Jesus Christ.
    I love when they are.

  13. I hate the hypocrisy in the church which undeniably there is a lot of. There are so many high-profile Christians who have done so many things that are completely inexcusable. It is so sad.

But I love it when Christians are living as they should. A true Christian should love everyone regardless if other people share their religious beliefs, culture, and even if the other person does not like them.

  14. I hate how if someone doesn't fit nicely into a denominational pigeon-hole, then they're made to feel like they're lesser of a Christian in many churches.

I hate how indifferent and oblivious churches can be to newcomers...those churches where everyone just shakes hands when the pastor says "go" but make no real connections with anyone new, and then just check that off their list of Christianly duties.

I love finding the right church where I do feel embraced, and like I have a family and strong support group that understands my joy and strife.

  15. I hate that they think I need to be saved.

  16. I don't hate, but I am very disappointed, when kind, intelligent Christian friends that I have met continue to cling to unsubstantiated beliefs out of insecurity.

Don't put faith on the supposed teachings of a ill-conceived man in the sky; put your faith in your senses and your ability to reason logically.

Things aren't always easy, but if you keep an open mind, trust in yourself, and don't cling to unsubstantiated beliefs, you will have enough strength to traverse the difficulties and ambiguities of life; I assure you.

  17. This question is problematic and somewhat offensive. Would lovehate@wm post a question asking "What do you love or hate about Jews?" I highly doubt it.

  18. I think it would be better to post a question asking: "What do you love or hate about Judaism?", because Jew refers to the ethnic group, while Judaism refers to the religion.

  19. 2 comments above: You have a solid point. There ESPECIALLY wouldn't be a thread titled "What do you love or hate about Islam?" That's just too dangerous a topic in the current social/political climate to throw out onto an anonymous chatboard. But since Christians represent a majority, it's perfectly fine for everyone to say anything they want about them. That being said I'm pleased with how rational and even-tempered the comments are so far overall. Maybe reasoned dialogue *can* exist on the internet. Anyway...

I don't currently identify myself as a Christian...
But I HATE when crazy fundamentalists (of any religion, really) try to cast certain social issues and aspects of their religion in black and white when they're really shades of gray.

I love when people can be devoutly religious and still be reasonable, kind, and accepting of others, like my parents.

  20. "I think it would be better to post a question asking: 'What do you love or hate about Judaism?', because Jew refers to the ethnic group, while Judaism refers to the religion."

Yeah but that's the point though. You shouldn't ask "What do you love or hate about Christians?" for the same reason that you shouldn't ask "What do you love or hate about Jews?" It suggests that there are qualities inherent to every member in a group of people that make them worth hating. Essentially, the question itself is stereotyping and, if the question is answered with what one hates about Christians, then it's just flat-out prejudice.

  21. But, there are qualities inherent to every member of Christianity. What makes them Christians is that they choose to have those qualities (believing in the existance of God, recognizing that Jesus died and rose from the dead, etc.).

  22. I hate that people have distorted Christianity with "religion" and have confused the masses.

I hate that "Christians" sit around in their church bubbles and talk about reaching out to people, that preach against judging others...and yet their actions scream the opposite message. But they still think they can turn around to someone and say "Let me tell you about Jesus...."

I love it when Christians SHOW JESUS!! When they love others as Jesus loves them. When they put others first always. I love when Christians truly act like the body of Christ in words and deeds.

  23. I hate that some so-called "Christians" have permissive views of homosexuality and pornography and allow such sinful things to be tolerated in our culture.
